How do you build a homemade wooden roller coaster?

Posted by admin on February 23rd, 2010 and filed under wooden | 4 Comments »

We (my cousin and I) need some tips on how to built a homemade wooden roller coaster. We also need to know how to make it safe.

it could be fun to do, but i wouldn’t advise it.
a) it would cost tons of money.
b) you would need way more room then any normal sized yard would provide for you.
c)unless you have a very strong background in physics you definitely shouldn’t do this. its not as easy as it sounds. you need to know what the exact height of the hill should be to make the coaster car go for the entire ride, and if you want more than one hill what the size of the first hill should be to get the car over the other hills. thats not it, there is loads more.

this isn’t something you both can do in an afternoon. it takes months, possibly even years.

How much would I need to pay for a wooden headjoint for my flute?

Posted by admin on February 21st, 2010 and filed under wooden | 1 Comment »

I have a silver-plated Gemeinhardt flute with a gold mouthpiece.
I don’t know the exact make, I don’t know how to check…
Could I get a wooden headjoint for this flute, or can you only buy them for certain brands/makes of the instrument?
How much would I likely be paying for a wooden headjoint?
Any estimates?

You may want to ask your question in
Home > Arts & Humanities > Other – Arts & Humanities

you can go to this website
http://www.gemeinhardt.com/main.taf?p=1,5

They list some other headjoints. You would need to find a dealer.
Try though the website. You do not mention where you are located

How do you make a simple wooden box about the size of a shoebox?

Posted by admin on February 19th, 2010 and filed under wooden | 2 Comments »

I’m trying to make a wooden box about the size of a shoebox to keep pictures, small figurines, etc., anything that will remind me of my memories. I want to use it as a keepsake box. Does anyone have any idea on how to make it? What items will I need? I’m also on a tight budget, so I dont have a lot to spare. Anyone have any idea on how to make a cheap one? Thanks!

Making the box may require tools that you don’t have. I found if you go to a craft store, there are a lot of finished and unfinished boxes made of different materials. You could decorate the box any way you choose. Some are beautiful hat boxes. Sometimes, there are great sales. Walk around and see what is there. I have also been lucky at thrift stores. Have fun.

How do you clean a heavy wooden cutting board?

Posted by admin on February 17th, 2010 and filed under wooden | 7 Comments »

I have this big heavy wooden cutting board that sits on top of my counter and I use daily. The problem is when I cut meats on it i’m scared the bacteria isnt being washed off with simply soap and water. Whats the best and easiest way to clean something like that….being that it isnt easy to lift into a sink? Thanks!

I always use soap and water on mine….and let dry well. The wood (as opposed to plastic or stone cutting boards) has natural
anti-bacterial properties…especially cedar. But if your worried, use a stronger cleanser…a mild acid like vinegar (acetic acid).

How do I clean an antique wooden coffee table?

How do I clean an antique wooden coffee table? Its kind of dirty / dusty and the finish needs polishing to make it shiny again. Thanks for any help.

I would use the Murphy’s Oil Soap to clean the piece, then good furniture polish such as Guardsman or Old English to bring the finish back.

How can you properly clean a wooden cutting board?

I know it’s bad, but we cut chicken on our wooden cutting board. Can we use bleach to kill those nasty germs and reduce the risk of cross contamination?

Place the board in your dishwasher every once in awhile. Remember to use a separate board for beef and for veggies if you cook a lot. You can get the plastic cutting sheets at Wal-Mart pretty inexpensively and use those over the wooden one.
I have used a wooden board for years and simply sponge it off with soapy water. I also use a small amount of bleach then rinse well. If it is stained use lemon and salt, which work well on a lot of things, and rub it in to the spot. Deep stains may be removed with sandpaper. If you wish to apply oil afterward, you can do so too after it has dried.
I owned a restaurant for several years and always used a mild soap and water on the wooden chop blocks and oiled them from time to time. Either mineral oil or they make a special oil specifically for food preparation. I never had any problems but I did use different boards for each. Too remember to use different knives on the different foods you are preparing. The acrylic boards are non-porous and I always threw those in the dishwasher. If not, bacteria will grow in the knive grooves. The thing about placing the wooden one in the dw is it can warp. I never had a problem with My husband made my board for me. It is quite thick, only about 16-18" long and 2" deep and 10" wide. You can place the board in your Microwave (if it fits) and that too will zap any bacteria that lives deep inside the wood. Although take care not to over heat the wood! Good luck and Happy Cooking!

How do i build a stable wooden frame in a metal chassis?

Posted by admin on February 6th, 2010 and filed under wooden | 1 Comment »

Ok so i just removed an extremely old in wall air conditioner, needless to say it was very large. The metal chassis is still in the wall and i filled it with a smaller window air conditioner. Only major problem is that i need a way to stabilize the wooden frame i built around the new air conditioner. I plan on placing dry wall in the area around the new air conditioner, but i need the frame stabilized to do so. Any tips on how to create a stable wood frame in a metal chassis?

You need the wood to be pushing/snug to the chassis at several points of contact. Build your frame so that after the fasteners are in place in the wood, it can’t move forward, back, side to side, up/down, etc…
