http://www.WatchMojo.com looks at the business of Barbie, aka. Barbara Millicent Roberts. Inspired by her daughter Barbara, Ruth Handler created Barbie and suggested the idea to her husband Elliot, a co-founder of the Mattel toy company. With two Barbie dolls sold every second of every day, Barbie is the most successful doll ever. Launched at the 1959 International Toy Fair for $3, Barbie initially sold over 351,000 units in its first year in the market. With over 1 billion units sold since 1959, Barbie is the # 1 selling doll of all time and a cultural icon; inspiring over 70 designers including Calvin Klein, Gucci and Versace. Totally Hair Body – launched in 1992 – remains its most popular doll, with 10 million units sold in three years (1992-95). In recent years, Mattel faced heightened competition from MGA Entertainment’s Bratz dolls, but in 2008, it won a copyright infringement lawsuit. Today, over 90% of girls aged 3 to 10 years own a Barbie doll.

How does the company Mattel use free trade agreements to set up production sites in other countries?

Posted by admin on March 1st, 2010 and filed under mattel | 1 Comment »

Mattel could always set up production sites in other countries regardless of NAFTA or other free trade agreements.

The incentive for Mattel to set up production sites in member countries is that under a free trade agreement, there will be no tariffs to worry about. This means they can build a plant in Mexico, and import the goods back to US without risking a tax on the import. Whereas if they built the plant in a country that wasn’t a member of the agreement, they may have to pay that tarrif. So under the free trade agreement, Mattel can lower their manufacturing cost without raising their tax obligation.

Does anyone remember the set of dolls that mattel came out with in the mid-nineties?

Posted by admin on February 25th, 2010 and filed under mattel | 1 Comment »

There were 6 of them. I remember two of there names- Brock and Tori. There were 2 different sets of these dolls(they both had the same names, just different outfits. They even had a book series about the dolls. And there was a playhouse kind of thing that you could buy that was their high school.

It was the Generation Girl Barbie series. The two sets were Dance Party and My Room.
